We Give Thee but Thine Own

~William W. How~

We give thee but Thine own,
Whate'er the gift may be;
All that we have is Thine alone,
A trust, O Lord, from Thee.

May we Thy bounties thus
As stewards true receive,
And gladly, as Thou blessest us,
To Thee our firstfruits give.

O hearts are bruised and dead,
And homes are bare and cold,
And lambs for whom the Shepherd bled
Are straying from the fold.

To comfort and to bless,
To find a balm for woe,
To tend the lone and fatherless
Is angels' work below.

The captive to release,
To God the lost to bring,
To teach the way of life and peace
It is a Christ-like thing.

And we believe Thy Word,
Though dim our faith may be;
Whate'er for Thine we do, O Lord,
We do it unto Thee.

New Year 1945

~Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906 - 1945)

With every power for good to stay and guide me,
Comforted and inspired beyond all fear,
I'll live these days with You in thought beside me,
And pass, with You, into the coming year.

The old year still torments our hearts, unhastening:
The long days of our sorrow will endure.
Father, grant to the soul Thou hast been chastening
That Thou hast promised - the healing and the cure.

Should it be ours to drain the cup of grieving
Even to the dregs of pain, at Thy command,
We will not falter, thankfully receiving
All that is given by Thy loving hand.

But, should it be Thy will once more to release us
To life's enjoyment and its good sunshine,
That we've learned from sorrow shall increase us
And all our life be dedicate as Thine.

Today, her candles shed their radiant greeting:
Lo, on our darkness are they not Thy light,
Leadintg us haply to our longed-for meeting?
Thou canst illumine e'en our darkest night.

When now the silence deepens for our harken:
Grant we may hear Thy children's voices raise
From all the unseen world around us darkening
Their universal paean, in Thy praise.

While all the powers of Good and and attend us;
Boldly we'll face the future, be it what may.
At even,and at morn, God will befriend us,
And oh, most surely on each new year's day!

I Take, He Undertakes

~A. B. Simpson~

I clasp the hand of Love divine,
I claim the gracious promise mine,
And add to His my countersign,
"I take" - "He undertakes."

I take Thee, blessed Lord,
I give myself to Thee,
And Thou, according to Thy word,
Dost undertake for me.

I take salvation full and free,
Through Him who gave His live for me,
He undertakes my all to be,
"I take" - "He undertakes."

I take Him as my holiness,
My spirit's spotless, heavenly dress,
I take the Lord, my righteousness,
"I take"- "He undertakes."

I take the promised Holy Ghost,
I take the power of Pentecost,
To fill me to the uttermost,
"I take" - "He undertakes."

I take Him for this mortal frame,
I take my healing through His Name,
And all His risen life I claim,
"I take" - "He undertakes."

I simply take Him at His word,
I praise Him that my prayer is heard,
And claim my answer from the Lord,
"I take" - "He undertakes."

Songs/Poems of Praise and Worship # 2

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away." Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus' Name, Amen

Father, I want to know Thee, but my cowardly heart fears to give up its toys. I cannot part with them without inward bleeding, and I do not try to hide from Thee the terror of the parting. I come trembling, but I do come. Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become every part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival. Then shalt Thou make the place of Thy feet glorious. Then shall my heart have no need of the sun to shine in it, for Thyself wilt be the light of it, and there shall be no night there. In Jesus' Name, Amen

Only to sit and think of God
Oh what a joy it is!
To think the thought, to breathe the Name;
Earth has no higher bliss.
Father of Jesus, love's reward!
What rapture it will be,
Prostrate before Thy throne to lie,
And gaze and gaze on Thee!

~Fredrick Faber~

Lord, how excellent are Thy ways, and how devious
and dark of the ways of man. Show us how to
die, that we may rise again to newness of life.
Rend the veil of our self-life from the top down
as Thou didst rend the veil of the Temple. We
would draw near in full assurance of faith.
We would dwell with Thee in daily experience
here on this earth so that we may be accustomed
to the glory when we enter Thy heaven to
dwell with Thee there. In Jesus' Name, Amen

O God, quicken to life every power within
me, that I may lay hold on eternal things. Open my
eyes that I may see; give me acute spiritual
perception; enable me to taste Thee and know
that Thou art good. Make heaven more real to
me than earthly things have ever been, Amen
____________________

O God and Father, I repent of my sinful preoccupation
with visible things. The world has been too much with
me. Thou hast been here and I knew it not. I have
been blind to Thy presence. Open my eyes that I
may behold Thee in and around me. For Christ's
sake, Amen

Lord, teach me to listen. The times are noisy and my
ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds
which continually assault them. Give me the spirit
of the boy Samuel when he said to Thee, "Speak,
for Thy servant heareth." Let me hear Thee speaking
in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy
voice, that its tones may be familiar when the
sounds of earth die away and the only sound
will be the music of Thy speaking voice. Amen

Nicholas of Cusa wrote four hundred years ago:

When all my endeavor is turned toward Thee because
all Thy endeavor is turned toward me; when I look
unto Thee alone with all my attention, nor ever turn
aside the eyes of my mind, because Thou dost enfold
me with Thy constant regard; when I direct my love toward Thee alone because Thou, who art Love's self hast turned
Thee toward me alone. And what, Lord, is my life, save
that embrace wherein Thy delightsome sweetness doth
so lovingly enfold me?
_____________________

O Lord, I have heard a good word inviting
me to look away to Thee and be satisfied.
My heart longs to respond, but sin has clouded
my vision till I see Thee but dimly. Be pleased
to cleanse me in Thine own precious blood, and
make me inwardly pure,so that I may with
unveiled eyes gaze upon Thee all the days
of my earthly pilgrimage.
Then shall I be prepared to behold Thee in full
splendor in the day when Thou shalt appear
to be glorified in Thy saints and admired in
all of them that believe. Amen
______________________

O God, be Thou exalted over my possessions. Nothing
of earth's treasures shall seem dear unto me if only
Thou art glorified in my life. Be Thou exalted over
my friendships. I am determined that Thou shalt be
above all, though I must stand deserted and alone in
the midst of the earth. Be Thou exalted above my
comforts. Though it mean the loss of bodily comforts
and the carrying of heavy crosses, I shall keep my
vow made this day before Thee. Be Thou exalted over
my reputation. Make me ambitious to please Thee
even if as a result I must sink into obscurity and my
name be forgotten as a dream. Rise, O Lord, into
Thy proper place of honor, above my ambitions,
above my ambitions, above my likes and dislikes,
above my family, my health and even my life itself.
Let me sink that Thou mayest rise above. Ride forth
upon me as Thou didst ride into Jerusalem mounted
upon the humble beast, a colt, the foal of an ass,
and let me hear the children cry to Thee, "Hosanna
in the highest." Amen
_______________________

Lord, make me childlike. Deliver me from the urge
to compete with another for place or prestige or
position. I would be simple and artless as a little
child. Deliver me from pose and pretense. Forgive
me for thinking of myself. Help me to forget myself
and find my true peace in beholding Thee. That
Thou may answer this prayer I humble myself before
Thee. Lay upon me Thy easy yoke of self-forgetfulness
that through it I may find rest. Amen
____________________

Lord, I would trust Thee completely; I would be
altogether Thine; I would exalt Thee above all. I
desire that I may feel no sense of possessing
anything outside of Thee. I want constantly to be
aware of Thy overshadowing presence and to hear
Thy speaking voice. I long to live in restful sincerity
of heart. I want to live so fully in the Spirit that all
my thoughts may be as sweet incense ascending
to Thee and every act of my life be an act of worship.
Therefore I pray in the words of Thy great servant
of old, "I beseech Thee so for to cleanse the intent
of mine heart with the unspeakable gift of Thy grace,
that I may perfectly love Thee and worthily praise
Thee." And all this I confidently believe Thou wilt
grant me through the merits of Jesus Christ Thy Son.
Amen

Songs/Poems of Praise and Worship

Adoration

Almighty One! I bend in dust before Thee;
Even so veiled cherubs bend;
In calm and still devotion I adore Thee,
All-wise, all-present Friend!

Thou to the earth its emerald robes hast given
Or curtained it in snow;
And the bright sun, and the soft moon in heaven,
Before Thy presence bow.

Thou Power sublime! whose throne is firmly seated
On stars and glowing suns;
O, could I praise Thee, could my soul, elated,
Waft Thee seraphic tones,
Had I the lyres of angels, could I bring Thee
An offering worthy Thee,
In what bright notes of glory would I sing Thee,
Blest notes of ecstasy!

Eternity! Eternity! how solemn,
How terrible the sound!
Here, leaning on thy promises, a column
Of strength, may I be found,
O, let my heart be ever Thine, while beating,
As when twill cease to beat!
Be Thou my portion, till that awful meeting
When I my God shall greet!

The Unity of God

One God! one Majesty!
There is no God but Thee!
Unbounded, unextended Unity!

Awful in unity,
O God! we worship Thee
More simply one, because supremely Three!

Dread, unbeginning One!
Single, yet not alone,
Creation hath not set Thee on a higher throne.

Unfathomable Sea!
All life is out of Thee,
And Thy life is Thy blissful Unity.

All things that from Thee run,
All works that Thou hast done,
Thou didst in honor of Thy being One.

And by Thy being One,
Ever by that alone,
Couldst Thou do, and doest, what Thou hast done.

We from Thy oneness come,
Beyond it cannot roam,
And in Thy goodness find our one eternal home.

Blest be Thy unity!
All joys are one to me,
The joy that there can be no other God than Thee!

I've Turned My Back Upon the World

I've turned my back upon the world
With all its idle pleasures,
And set my heart on better things,
On higher, holier treasures;
No more its glitter and its glare,
And vanity shall blind me;
I've crossed the separating line,
And left the world behind me.

We're Marching to Zion

Come, we that love the Lord,
And let our joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
Join in a song with sweet accord
And thus surround the throne,
And thus surround the throne.

We're marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion;
We're marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

Let those refuse to sing
Who never knew our God;
But children of the heavenly King,
But children of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad,
May speak their joys abroad.

The hill of Zion yields
A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heavenly fields,
Before we reach the heavenly fields,
Or walk the golden streets,
Or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry;
We're marching through Emmanuel's ground,
We're marching through Emmanuel's ground,
To fairer worlds on high,
To fairer worlds on high.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

A mighty fortress is Our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not His equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God's own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And through this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Would You Live for Jesus? (and other songs/poems)

Would You Live for Jesus?

~Cyrus S. Nusbaum~

Would you live for Jesus, and be always pure and good?

Would you walk with Him within the narrow road?
Would you have Him bear your burden, carry all your load?
Let Him have His way with thee.

Would you have Him make you free, and follow at His call?

Would you know the peace that comes by giving all?
Would you have Him save you, so that you can never fall?
Let Him have His way with thee.

Would you in His kingdom find a place of constant rest?

Would you prove Him true in providential test?
Would you in His service labor always at your best?
Let Him have His way with thee.

His power can make you what you ought to be;

His blood can cleanse your heart and make you free;
His love can fill your soul, and you will see.
'Twas best for Him to have His way with thee.

Oil and Wine

~Gerhard Tersteegen~

There is a balm for every pain,

A medicine for all sorrow;
The eye turned backward to the Cross,
And forward to the morrow.

The morrow of the glory and the psalm,

When He shall come;
The morrow of the harping and the palm,
The welcome home.

Meantime in His beloved hands our ways,

And on His heart the wandering heart at rest;
And comfort for the weary one who lays
His head upon His breast.

What Will You Do With Jesus?

~A. B. Simpson~

Jesus is standing in Pilate's hall,

Friendless, forsaken, betrayed by all;
Hearken! what meaneth the sudden call?
What will you do with Jesus?

Jesus is standing on trial still,

You can be false to Him if you will,
You can be faithful through good or ill:
What will you do with Jesus?

Will you evade Him as Pilate tried?

Or will you choose Him, what'er betide?
Vainly you struggle from Him to hide;
What will you do with Jesus?

Will you, like Peter, your Lord deny?

Or will you scorn from His foes to fly,
Daring for Jesus to live or die?
What will you do with Jesus?

Jesus, I give Thee my heart today!

Jesus, I'll follow Thee all the way,
Gladly obeying Thee! will you say:
"This I will do with Jesus!"

What will you do with Jesus?

Neutral you cannot be;
Some day your heart will be asking,
"What will He do with me?"

Victory Through Grace

~Fanny J. Crosby~

Conquering now and still to conquer,

rideth a King in His might;
Leading the host of all the faithful
into the midst of the fight;
See them with courage advancing,
clad in their brilliant array,
Shouting the Name of their Leader,
hear them exultingly say:
"Not to the strong is the battle,
nor to the swift is the race,
Yet to the true and the faithful vict'ry
is promised through grace.

Conquering now and still to conquer,

who is this wonderful King?
Whence are the armies which He leadeth,
while of His glory they sing?
He is our Lord and Redeemer,
Saviour and Monarchdivine;
They are the stars that forever bright
in His kingdom shall shine.

Conquering now and still to conquer,

Jesus, Thou Ruler of all,
Thrones and their scepters all shall perish,
crowns and their splender shall fall,
Yet shall the armies Thou leadest
faithful and true to the last,
Find in Thy mansions eternal rest,
when their warfare is past.

Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

~Augustus M. Toplady~

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

let me hide myself in Thee;
let the water and the blood,
from Thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands

call fulfill Thy law's commands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,

simply to the Cross I cling;
naked,k come to Thee for dress;
helpless, look to Thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Saviour, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,

when mine eyes shall close to death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in Thee.

Christ: We Praise & Worship Him

Softly and Tenderly

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,

Calling for you and for me.
See, on the portals,
He's waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.

Why should we tarry

When Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger
And heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

Time is now fleeting;

The moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me.
Shadows are gathering;
Death's night is coming,
Coming for you and for me.

Oh for the wonderful

Love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned,
He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

Come home, come home.

Ye who are weary, come home.
Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling, "O sinner, come home!"

I'll Live for Him

My life, my love I give to Thee,

Thou Lamb of God Who died for me;
O may I ever faithful be,
My Saviour and my God!

I now believe Thou dost receive,

For Thou hast died that I might live;
And now henceforth I trust in Thee,
My Saviour and my God!

O Thou Who died on Calvary,

To save my soul and make me free,
I'll consecrate my life to Thee,
My Saviour and my God!

I'll live for Him Who died for me,

How happy then my life shall be!
I'll live for Him Who died for me,
My Saviour and my God!

Yield Not to Temptation

Yield not to temptation, for yielding insin;

Each vict'ry will help you some other to win;
Fight manfully onward, dark passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus, He'll carry you through.

Shun evil companions, bad language disdain,

God's name hold in rev'rence, nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest, kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus, He'll carry you through.

To him that o'ercometh, God giveth a crown,

Through faith we will conquer,
though often cast down;
He who is our Saviour, our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus, He'll carry you through.

Ask the Saviour to help you,

Comfort,strengthen, and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.

Songs/Worship to our Lord!

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies
There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and side
Where all the love I've ever found
Comes like a flood
Comes flowing down.

At the Cross
At the Cross
I surrender my life
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
and my sin washed white
I owe all to You
I owe all to You, Jesus.

There's a place where sin and shame are powerless,
Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness,
Where all the love I've ever found,
Comes like a flood
Comes flowing down.

At the Cross
At the Cross
I surrender my life,
I'm in awe of You,
I'm in awe of You,
Where Your love ran red
and my sin washed white,
I owe all to You,
I owe all to You, Jesus.

Here my hope is found,
Here on holy ground,
Here I bow down,
Here I bow down, Here arms open wide,
Here You save my life,
Here I bow down,
Here I bow down.

At the Cross
At the Cross
I surrender my life,
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
and my sin washed white,
I owe all to You,
I owe all to You, Jesus.

Face to Face

~Carrie E. Breck~

Face to face with Christ my Saviour,
Face to face - what will it be,
When with rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ, who died for me?

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

Only faintly now I see Him,
With the darkened veil between;
But a blessed day is coming,
When His glory shall be seen.

What rejoicing in His presence,
When are banished grief and pain;
When the crooked ways are straightened,
And the dark things shall be plain!

Face to Face! O blissful moment!
Face to face to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ, who loves me so.

Thou Shepherd of Israel, and Mine"

~Charles Wesley~

Thou Shepherd of Israel, and mine,

The joy and desire of my heart,
For closer communion I pine,
I long to reside where Thou art:
The pasture I languish to find
Where all, who their Shepherd obey,
Are fed, on thy bosom reclined,
And screened from the heat of the day.

Ah! show me that happiest place,

The place of Thy people's abode,
Where saints in an ecstasy gaze,
And hang on a crucified God:
Thy love for a sinner declare,
Thy passion and death on the tree;
My spirit to Calvary bear,
To suffer and triumph with Thee.

'Tis there, with the lambs of Thy flock,

There only I cover to rest,
To lie at the foot of the rock,
Or rise to be hid in Thy breast;
'Tis there I would always abide,
And never a moment depart,
Concealed in the cleft of Thy side,
Eternally held in Thy heart.

The Light and Glory of the Word

~William Cowper~

The Spirit breaths upon the Word,

And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

A glory gilds the sacred page,

Majestic like the sun:
It gives a light to every age;
It gives, but borrows none.

The hand that gave it still supplies

The gracious light and heat:
His truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

Let everlasting thanks be Thine

For such a bright display
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.

My soul rejoices to pursue

The steps of Him I love,
Till glory break upon my view
In brighter worlds above.
