Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God # 2

Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God # 2

6. There are in the souls of wicked men those hellish principles reigning, that would presently kindle and flame out into hell-fire. if it were not for God's restraints. There is laid in the very nature of carnal men, a foundation for the torments of hell. There are those corrupt principles, in reigning power in them, and in full possession of them, that are seeds of hell-fire. These principles are active and powerful, exceeding violent in their nature, and if it were not for the restraining hand of God upon them, they would soon break out, they would flame out after the same manner as the same corruptions, the same enmity does in the hearts of damned souls, and would beget the same torments as they do in them. The souls of the wicked are in Scripture compared to the troubled sea, Isaiah 57:20. For the present, God restrains their wickedness by His mighty power as He does the raging waves of the troubled sea, saying, "Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further," but if God should withdraw that restraining power, it would soon carry all before it. Sin is the ruin and misery of the soul; it is destructive in its nature; and if God should leave it without restraint, there would need nothing else to make the soul perfectly miserable. The corruption of the heart of man is immoderate and boundless in its fury; and while wicked men live here, it is like fire pent up by God's restraints, whereas if it were let loose, it would set on fire the course of nature; and as the heart is now a sink of sin, so, if sin was not restrained, it would immediately turn the soul into a fiery oven, or a furnace of fire and brimstone.

7. It is no security to wicked men for one moment, that there are no visible means of death at hand. It is no security to a natural man that he is now in health, and that he does not see which way he should now immediately go out of the world by any accident, and that there is no visible danger in any respect in his circumstances. The manifold and continual experience of the world in all ages, shows this is no evidence, that a man is not on the very brink of eternity, and that the next step will not be into another world. The unseen, unthought of ways and means of persons going suddenly out of the world are innumerable and inconceivable. Unconverted man walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering, and there are innumerable places in this covering so weak that they will not bear their weight, and these places are not seen. The arrows of death fly unseen at noon-day; the sharpest sight cannot discern them. God has so many different unsearchable ways of taking wicked men out of the world and sending them to hell, that there is nothing to make it appear, that God had need to be at the expense of a miracle, or go out of the ordinary course of His providence, to destroy any wicked man, at any moment. All the means that there are of sinners going out of the world, are so in God's hands, and so universally and absolutely subject to His power and determination, that it does not depend at all the less on the mere will of God, whether sinners shall at any moment go to hell, than if means were never made use of, or at all concerned in the case.

8. Natural men's prudence and care to preserve their own lives, or the care of others to preserve them, do not secure them a moment. To this, divine providence and universal experience do also bear testimony. There is this clear evidence that men's own wisdom is no security to them from death; that if it were otherwise we should see some difference between the wise and politic men of the world, and others, with regard to their liableness to early and unexpected death: but now is it in fact? "How dieth the wise man? even as the fool." (Ecci. 2:16).

9. All wicked men's pains and contrivance which they use to escape hell, while they continue to reject Christ, and so remain wicked men, do not secure them from hell one moment. Almost every natural man that hears of hell, flatters himself that he shall escape it; he depends upon himself for his own security; he flatters himself in what he has done, in what he is not doing, or what he intends to do. Every one lays out matters in his own mind how he shall avoid damnation, and flatters himself that he contrives well for himself, and that his schemes will not fail. They hear indeed that there are but few saved and that the greater part of men that have died heretofore are gone to hell; but each one imagines that he lays out matters better for his own escape than others have done. He does not intend to come to that place of torment; he says within himself, that he intends to take effectual care, and to order matters so for himself as not to fail.

But the foolish children of men miserably delude themselves in their own schemes, and in confidence in their own strength and wisdom; they trust to nothing but a shadow. The great part of those who heretofore have lived under the same means of grace, and are now dead, are undoubtedly gone to hell; and it was not because they were not as wise as those who are now alive: it was not because they did not lay out matters as well for themselves to secure their own escape. If we  could speak with them, and inquire of them, one by one, whether they expected when alive, and when they used to hear about hell, ever to be the subjects of misery: we doubtless, should hear one and another reply, "No, I never intended to come here: I had laid out matters otherwise in my mind; I thought I should contrive well for myself: I thought my scheme good. I intended to take effectual care; but it came upon me unexpected; I did not look for it at that time,and in that manner; it came as a thief: Death outwitted me: God's wrath was too quick for me. Oh, my cursed foolishness! I was flattering myself, and pleasing myself with vain dreams of what I would do hereafter;and when I was saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction came upon me."

10. God has laid himself under no obligation, by any promise to keep any natural man out of hell one moment. God certainly has made no promises either of eternal life, or of any deliverance or preservation from eternal death, but what are contained in the covenant of grace, the promises that are given in Christ, in whom all the promises are yea and amen. But surely they have no interest in the promises of the covenant of grace who are not the children of the covenant, who do not believe in any of the promises, and have no interest in the Mediator of the covenant.

So that, whatever some have imagined and pretended about promises made to natural men's earnest seeking and knocking, it is plain and manifest, that whatever pains a natural man takes in religion, whatever prayers he makes, till he believes in Christ, God is under no manner of obligation to keep him a moment from eternal destruction.

Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God # 1

[this sermon was preached by Jonathan Edwards and a revival of mighty power followed his message. It was the last, great, long-lasting revival in America.]

Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God # 1

"Their foot shall slide in due time" (Deut. 32:35)

In this verse is threatened the vengeance of God on the wicked unbelieving Israelites, who were God's visible people, and who lived under the means of grace; but who, notwithstanding all God's wonderful works towards them, remained (as Deut. 32:28) void of counsel, having no understanding in them. Under the cultivations of heaven, they brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit; as in the two verses next preceding the text. The expression I have chosen for my text, their foot shall slide in due time, seems to imply the following things, relating to the punishment and destruction to which these wicked Israelites were exposed.

1. That they were always exposed to destruction; as one that stands or walks in slippery places is always exposed to fall. This is implied in the manner of their destruction coming upon them, being represented by their foot sliding. The same is expressed, "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction." (Psalm 63:18).

2. It implies, that they were always exposed to sudden unexpected destruction. As he that walks in slippery places is every moment liable to fall, he cannot foresee one moment whether he shall stand or fall the next; and when he does fall, he falls at once without warning; which is also expressed in "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction: How are they brought into desolation as in a moment? (Psalm 73:18-19).

3. Another thing implied is, that they are liable to fall of themselves, without being thrown down by the hand of another; as he that stands or walks on slippery ground needs nothing but his own weight to throw him down.

4. That the reason why they are not fallen already and do not fall now is only that God's appointed time is not come. For it is said, that when that due time, or appointed time comes, their foot shall slide. Then they shall be left to fall, as they are inclined by their own weight. God will not hold them up in these slippery places any longer, but will let them go; and then, at that very instant, they shall fall into destruction; as he that stands on such slippery declining ground, on the edge of a pit, he cannot stand alone, when he is let go he immediately falls and is lost.

The observation from the words that I would now insist upon is this. - There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell, but the mere pleasure of God. - By the mere pleasure of God, I mean his sovereign pleasure, his arbitrary will, restrained by no obligation, hindered by no manner of difficulty, any more than if nothing else but God's mere will had in the least degree, or in any respect whatsoever, any hand in the preservation of wicked men one moment. The truth of this observation may appear by the following considerations:

1. There is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Men's hands cannot be strong when God rises up. The strongest have no power to resist him, nor can any deliver out of his hands. He is not only able to cast wicked men into hell, but he can most easily do it. Sometimes an earthly prince meets with a great deal of difficulty to subdue a rebel, who has found means to fortify himself, and has made himself strong by the numbers of his followers. But it is not so with God. There is no fortress that is any defense from the power of God. Though hand join in hand, and vast multitudes of God's enemies combine and associate themselves, they are easily broken in pieces. They are as great heaps of light chaff before the whirlwind; or large quantities of dry stubble before devouring flames. We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; so it is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by: thus easy is it for God, when He pleases to cast His enemies down to hell. What are we, that we should think to stand before Him,at whose rebuke the earth trembles, and before whom the rocks are thrown down?

2. They deserve to be cast into hell; so that divine justice never stands in the way, it makes no objection against God's using His power at any moment to destroy them. Yea, on the contrary, justice calls aloud for an infinite punishment of their sins. Divine justice says of the tree that brings forth such grapes of Sodom, "Cut it down, why cumbereth it the ground?" (Luke 13:7). The  sword of divine justice is every moment brandished over their heads, and it is nothing but the hand of arbitrary mercy, and God's mere will, that holds it back.

3. They are already under a sentence of condemnation to hell. They do not only justly deserve to be cast down thither, but the sentence of the law of God, that eternal and immutable rule of righteousness that God has fixed between Him and mankind, is gone out against them, and stands against them; so that they are bound over already to hell. "He that believeth not is condemned already." (John 3:18). So that every unconverted man properly belongs to hell; that is his place; from thence he is, John 8:23. "Ye are from beneath," and thither he is bound; it is the place that justice, and God's Word, and the sentence of His unchangeable law, assign to him.

4. They are now the objects of that very same anger and wrath of God, that is expressed in the torments of hell. And the reason why they do not go down to hell at each moment, is not because God, in whose power they are, is not then very angry with them, as He is with many miserable creatures now tormented in hell, who there feel and bear the fierceness of His wrath. Yea, God is a great deal more angry with great numbers that are now on earth, yea,doubtless, with many that are now in this congregation, who it may be are at ease, than He is with many of those who are now in the flames of hell. - So that it is not because God is unmindful of their wickedness,and does not resent it, that He does not let loose His hand and cut them off. God is not altogether such an one as themselves, though they may imagine Him to be so. The wrath of God burns against them, their damnation does not slumber, the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them; the flames do not rage and glow. The glittering sword is sharpened, and held over them, and the pit hath opened its mouth under them.

5. The devil stands ready to fall upon them, and seize them as his own, at what moment God shall permit him. They belong to him; he has their souls in his possession, and under his dominion. The scripture represents them as his goods, (Luke 11:12). The devil watches them; they are ever by him at his right hand; he stands waiting for them, like a greedy, hungry lion that see its prey, and expects to have it, but are for the present kept back. If God should withdraw His hand, by which the devil is  restrained, he would in one moment fly upon their poor souls. The old serpent is gaping for them; hell opens its mouth wide to receive them, and if God should permit it, they would be hastily swallowed up and lost.

Hymns of Praise and Worship

Hymns of Praise and Worship

Song of the Lamb

Blessing and honor and glory and power,
Wisdom and riches and strength evermore
Give ye to Him who our battle hath won,
Whose are the Kingdom, the crown, and the throne.

Into the heaven of the heavens hath He gone;
Sitteth He now in the joy of the throne;
Weareth He now of the Kingdom the crown;
Singeth He now the new song with His own.

Soundeth the heaven of the heavens with His Name;
Ringeth the earth with His glory and fame;
Ocean and mountain, stream, forest, and flower
Echo His praises and tell of His power.

Ever ascendeth the song and the joy;
Ever descendeth the love from on high;
Blessing and honor and glory and praise,
This is the theme of the hymns that we raise.

Give we the glory and praise to the Lamb;
Take we the robe and the harp and the psalm;
Sing we the song of the Lamb that was slain,
Dying in weakness, but rising to reign.

Jesus Lover Of My Soul

Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high.
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.
All my trust on Thee is stayed, all my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of Thy wing.

Wilt Thou not regard my call? Wilt Thou not accept my prayer?
Lo! I sink, I faint, I fall - Lo! on Thee I cast my care;
Reach me out Thy gracious hand! While I of Thy strength receive,
Hoping against hope I stand, dying, and behold, I live.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want, more than all in Thee I find;
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind.
Just and holy is Thy Name, I am all unrighteousness;
False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with Thee is found, grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart; rise to all eternity.

The Old Rugged Cross

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Refrain:
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain:
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He'll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.

I Love To Tell the Story

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory. Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story, because I know 'tis true;
It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.

Chorus:

I love to tell the story, 'Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, More wonderful it seems
Then all the golden fancies Of all our golden dreams.
I love to tell the story, it did so much for me;
And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.

I love to tell the story, 'Tis pleasant to repeat
What seems each time I tell it, More wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story, For some have never heard
The message of salvation from God's own holy Word.

I love to tell the story, For those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting To hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
'Twill be the old, old story that
 I have loved so long.

Hymns of Praise and Worship

At the Name of Jesus

At the Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess Him King of glory now;
'Tis the Father's pleasure we should call Him Lord,
Who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

At His voice creation sprang at once to sight,
All the angel faces, all the hosts of light,
Thrones and dominations, stars upon their way,
All the heavenly orders, in their great array.

Humbled for a season, to receive a name
From the lips of sinners unto whom He came,
Faithfully He bore it, spotless to the last,
Brought it back victorious when from death He passed.

Name Him, brothers, name Him with love strong as death
But with awe and wonder and with bated breath!
He is God the Saviour, He is Christ the Lord,
Ever to be worshiped, trusted and adored.

In your hearts enthrone Him; there let Him subdue
All that is not holy, all that is not true;
Crown Him as your Captain in temptation's hour;
Let His will enfold you in its light and power.

Watch, for this Lord Jesus shall return again,
With His Father's glory over the earth to reign;
For the day is coming when each knee shall bow,
So let hearts confess Him King of glory now.

Awake, Awake!

Awake! Awake! the Master now is calling us,
Arise! Arise! And, trusting in His Word,
Go forth! Go forth! Proclaim the year of jubilee,
And take the cross, the blessed cross of Christ our Lord.

Refrain:

On, on, swell the chorus,
On, on, the morning star is shining o'er us;
On, on, while before us,
Our mighty, mighty Saviour leads the way.
Glory, glory, hear the everlasting throng,
Shout "Hosanna!" while we boldly march along;
Faithful soldiers here below, only Jesus will we know;
Shouting "Free salvation!" o'er the world we go.

A cry for light from dying ones in heathen lands;
It comes, it comes across the ocean's foam;
Then haste! Oh, haste to spread the words of truth abroad,
Forgetting not the starving poor at home, dear home.

Refrain:

O Church of God, extend thy kind, maternal arms,
To save the lost on mountains dark and cold;
Reach out thy hand with loving smile to rescue them,
And bring them to  the shelter of the Saviour's fold.

Refrain:

Look up! Look up! The promised day is drawing near,
When all shall hail, shall hail the Saviour King;
When peace and joy shall fold their wings in every clime,
And "Glory, hallelujah!" over the earth shall ring.

Watch and Pray

Christian, seek not yet repose,
Cast thy dreams of ease away;
Thou art in the midst of foes:
Watch and pray.

Principalities and powers,
Mustering their unseen array,
Wait for thy unguarded hours:
Watch and pray.

Gird thy heavenly armor on,
Wear it ever, night and day;
Ambushed lies the evil one:
Watch and pray.

Hear the victors who o'ercame;
Still they mark each warrior's way;
All with one sweet voice exclaim,
Watch and pray.

Hear, above all, hear Thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart His Word,
Watch and pray.

Watch, as if on that alone
Hung the issue of the day;
Pray, that help may be sent down,
Watch and pray.

Sing With All the Sons of Glory

Sing with all the sons of glory,
Sing the resurrection song!
Death and sorrow, earth's dark story,
to the former days belong.
All around the clouds are breaking,
soon the storms of time shall cease;
In God's likeness, man awaking,
knows the everlasting peace.

O what glory, far exceeding
all that eye has yet perceived!
Holiest hearts for ages waiting,
never that full joy conceived.
God has promised, Christ prepares it,
On that day our welcome waits;
Every humble spirit shares it,
Christ has passed th' eternal gates.

Life eternal! heaven rejoices:
Jesus lives who once was dead;
Child of God lift up thy head!
Patriarchs from the distant ages,
Saints who longing oft would pray,
Prophets, psalmists, seers, and sages,
All await the glorious day.

Life eternal! O what wonders
Crowd on faith; what joy unknown,
When, amidst earth's closing thunders,
Saints shall stand before the throne!
O to enter that bright portal,
See that glowing firmament
Know with thee O God immortal,
Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

Prayers

Prayers

Father, show me all that hinders the Spirit from taking full possession of me and filling me with the consciousness of His presence. Let my innermost being and my outer life all be under His leading. May I have the spiritual understanding that knows to ask according to Your will, and the living faith that receives what it asks. And when I do not know what or how to pray, teach me to bow in silent worship and keep waiting before You, knowing that the Spirit breathes the wordless prayer, which You alone can understand. Blessed God, I am a temple of the Holy Spirit. I yield myself for Him to use me as the Spirit of intercession. May my whole heart be so filled with the longing for Christ's honor and His love for the lost that my life may become one unutterable cry for the coming of Your kingdom. Amen
______________________

O my Father, I desire this day to walk before You with a good conscience, to do nothing that might grieve You or my blessed Lord Jesus. May the cleansing in the blood be a living, continual, and most effective deliverance from the power of sin, binding and strengthening me to serve You. May my whole walk with You be in the joy of the united witness of conscience and Spirit that I am pleasing to You. Amen
_____________________________

O Lord, teach Your church that wherever Christ as the power of God is not manifested, it is because He is so little known as the wisdom of God. Teach Your church to lead each child of God to the personal teaching and revelation of Christ within. Show us, O God, that the one great hindrance is our own wisdom, our imagining that we can understand the Word and truth of God. Teach us to become fools that we may be wise. May our whole life become one continued act of faith, that the Holy Spirit will surely do His word of teaching, guiding, and leading into the truth. We wait for this. Amen
__________________________

Teach us to know how the flesh can be conquered and its power broken. In the death of Your beloved Son, our old nature has been crucified. May we consider all things as loss to be made comformable to that death, and may we have the old nature kept in the place of death. We yield ourselves to the leading and rule of Your Holy Spirit. We believe that Christ is our life through the Spirit so that, instead of the life of effort and work, an entirely new life works within us. Our Father, by faith, we give up all to Your Spirit to be our life in us. Amen
_____________________________

Gracious God, let us hear Your call to be spiritual. Strengthen our faith that we may be filled with the confidence that the Holy Spirit will do His work to make us spiritual. We desire to cease from self and doubt. We give ourselves to Jesus our Lord, to rule in us and to reveal Himself by the Spirit. We bow before You in the childlike faith that Your Spirit, the Spirit of God, dwells in us every moment. May our souls increasingly be filled with holy awe and reverence at His presence. Grant that we may be mightily strengthened by Him in the innermost man. Then we shall be truly spiritual. Amen
_____________________________

Lord God, I do now accept the blessed truth: God the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, who is God Almighty, dwells in me. Blessed Jesus, I yield my whole being to You. I trust You to rise up in power and have dominion within me. Blessed Spirit, You are within me. On You do I wait all the day. I belong to You. Take entire possession of me for the Father and the Son. Amen
____________________________

Our Holy God, draw us mightily into Your holy presence and keep us waiting there. Deliver us from the terrible fascination with the world and the flesh so that Your divine glory may be our all-absorbing desire. May our whole heart be emptied to receive the Holy Spirit's revelation of Christ within. We desire to take Your words and let them dwell richly in us. We desire in stillness of soul to be silent unto God and wait for Him. We desire to trust and believe that the Father has given us His Spirit within us and is in secret working to reveal His Son. We do live the life of faith. We do believe in the Holy Spirit. Amen
______________________________

Lord Jesus, look upon Your church, look upon our hearts. And, whatever You see that there is not love like Yours, deliver us from all that is still selfish and unloving. Teach us to crucify self, which cannot love. Teach us to believe that we can love, because the Holy Spirit has been given to us. Teach us to begin to love and serve, to sacrifice self, and live for others. May love with action be increased and perfected in us. Teach us to believe that because You live in us. You love is in us, too. Now, we can love as You do, Lord Jesus. Amen
____________________________

Blessed Lord, may every believer know the Spirit that is in him and is in his brother. In all lowliness and love, help us to keep the unity of the Spirit with those with whom we come into contact. May all the leaders of Your church be enlightened from above. May the unity of the Spirit be more to them than all human bonds of union in creed or church order. May all who have put on the Lord Jesus above all things also put on love, the bond of perfectness. Lord Jesus, draw Your people in united prayer to the footstool of Your throne of glory. Fill us with Your Spirit, and we shall be one - one Spirit and one body. Amen

Prayers

Prayers

Blessed Father, may I know Your Holy Spirit by Having Him within me. May His witness to Jesus be divinely clear and mighty in my life. May His leading and sanctifying be in holy power. May His indwelling in my spirit be in such truth and life that the consciousness of Him as my life may be as sure as my natural life. Lord God, teach me and all Your people to know Your Spirit - to know that He is in us, to know Him as He reveals the Son and glorifies You as our Father. Amen
____________________________

Lord, I ask that the Spirit witness to me of Christ Jesus. May the truth of His atonement and blood dwell in me, and I in it. May His life and glory be truth in me, a living experience of His presence and power. My Father, may the Spirit of Your Son be my life. May each word of Your Son through Him be made true in me. I thank You once again, my Father, that the Spirit dwells within me. Grant that He may work mightily in me. May all Your people know their privilege and rejoice that the Holy Spirit within them reveals Christ as truth in them. Amen
___________________________

Blessed Lord Jesus, I do rejoice that I can have a fellowship more real, more near, more tender, and more effectual than if You were still here on earth. I thank You that Your Holy Spirit dwells within me and helps me to know what that fellowship is. Teach me in the fullness of faith to believe in You, from whom the fresh anointing flows and fills my life. Grant that the church may be awakened to know that the Spirit's indwelling is the secret of her enjoyment of Your presence and the power for fulfilling her calling. May Your abiding presence be my keeper and guide and friend. Amen
___________________________

Lord Jesus, teach us to maintain our closeness to You. Make our hearts and lives Yours alone. Teach us to hold fast our confidence that the Spirit who is within us will perfect His work. Above all, teach us to yield ourselves in ever-increasing dependence and emptiness to wait for the Spirit's teaching and leading. We desire to have no confidence in the flesh - its wisdom or its righteousness. Blessed Lord, let Your Spirit rise in great power and have dominion within us. May our hearts, by Him, be made the temple and the kingdom, in which You alone are glorified, in which Your glory fills all. Amen
________________________

Lord Jesus, make Your church aware of the knowledge of her calling. May the world believe that the Father sent You and lov4es them as He loves You, His Son. Lord Jesus, lay the burden of the sin of the world on the hearts of Your people. May we live to be members of Your body in whom Your Spirit dwells and proves Your presence to the world. Take away everything that hinders You from manifesting Your presence and saving power in us. Lord Jesus, Your Spirit is come to us to convince the world. Let Him come and work in ever-growing power. Amen
__________________________

My Father, I dedicate myself to You, to live and work, to pray and toil, to sacrifice and suffer for Your kingdom. I accept by faith the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit, the very Spirit of Christ, and yield myself to His indwelling. Give Your children the strength of the Holy Spirit, so that Christ may possess our hearts and lives. May our desire be that the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen
_________________________

Beloved Lord Jesus, I humbly ask You to make clear to us the blessed secret of the life of the Spirit. Teach us what it means to become dead to the law, so that our service of God is no longer in the oldness of the letter. Blessed Master, teach me to serve You in the newness and the liberty of the Spirit of life. Teach me to yield myself in large and whole-hearted faith to the Holy Spirit, so that my life may be lived in the glorious liberty of the children of God. Amen
_________________________

Father, I yield myself to You as Your child, in everything, to be led by Your Spirit. I forsake my own wisdom, my own will, my own way. Daily I wait in deep dependence on guidance from above. May my spirit be hushed in silence before Your Holy Spirit, while I wait to let Him rule within me. As I, through the Spirit, make dead the deeds of the body, may I be transformed by the renewing of my mind to know Your good and perfect will. May my whole being be so under the rule of the indwelling, sanctifying Spirit, that the spiritual understanding of Your will may indeed be the rule of my life. Amen

Lord, may my one desire be to have my spirit become the worthy dwelling of Your Spirit. Let Your words lift me up in holy trust and expectation to look for and claim all that Your promise means. My Father, I thank You that Your Spirit dwells in me. Let His indwelling be in power, in living fellowship with You and the indwelling of my Lord Jesus. May my daily walk be in the deep reverence of His holy presence within me. Amen

Blessed Lord Jesus, write the truth in my heart that loving obedience may look for a loving acceptance, sealed by the Spirit. With my whole heart, I do love You, and want to keep each one of Your commandments. I surrender myself afresh to You for this. In the depths of my soul, there is only one desire: that Your will be done in me as in heaven. I submit myself to every reproof of my conscience. To every moving of Your Spirit, I will yield implicit obedience. I give my will and life into Your death, that, being raised with You, the life of Your Holy Spirit may be my life. Amen

Blessed Father, we have heard Jesus' command to wait for the promise. We thank You for what has already been fulfilled in us. But our souls long for the full possession, the fullness of the blessing of Christ. Teach us to wait on You. Teach us, each day, as we draw near to You, to wait for the Spirit. In the sacrifice of our own wisdom and our will, may we learn to lie humbly before You, so that Your Spirit may work with power. Teach us that as our life of self is laid before You, day by day, the Holy life will rise in power, and our worship will be in Spirit and in truth. Amen

Blessed Father, I thank You that the Holy Spirit is to us the bearer of the fullness of Jesus. make me full. Let the Holy Spirit take and keep possession of my deepest, innermost life. Let Your Spirit fill my spirit. Let the fountain flow through all my soul's affections and powers. Let it flow out through my lips, speaking Your praise and love. Let my body be Your temple, full of the divine life. Lord God, I believe You have given it to me. I accept it as mine. Grant that throughout Your church, the fullness of the Spirit may be sought and found, may be known and proved. Lord Jesus, our glorified King, let Your Church be full of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Blessed Lord Jesus, with my whole heart I worship You as the baptizer with the Holy Spirit. Reveal Yourself to me, that I may know what I can expect from You. My holy Lord, I thank You that the Holy Spirit is also in me. Give me the full, overflowing measure You have promised. Let Him be to me the full, unceasing revelation of Your presence in my heart. Lord Jesus, baptize me and fill me with the Holy Spirit. Amen

Our Father, reveal to Your Church that we are Christ's own body, sharing with Him in His life, His powers, and His glory. Show us how the Holy Spirit, as the bearer of that life and power and glory, is waiting to reveal it within us. In the name of Jesus, revive Your Church. Make every believer a temple, full of the Holy Spirit. Make every church a consecrated company that testifies of a present Christ, awaiting the fullness of the power from on high. Make every preacher of the Word a minister of the Spirit. And let Pentecost be the sign throughout the earth that Jesus reigns, that His redeemed are His Body, that His Spirit works, and that every knee will bow to Him. Amen

My Father, I ask You to teach me that I have the power of the living Jesus. I desire that the power be a divine strength in human weakness, so that the glory may be Yours alone. May I learn to receive it in a faith that allows Jesus to hold the power and do the work in the midst of my weakness. May Jesus be so present with me that my witness may be of Him alone. I desire to submit my whole being to this divine power. I bow before His rule every day and all day long. I humble myself to do all His commands. Father, let the power of Your Spirit rule in me so that I can be ready to be used. May my one purpose in life be that Your blessed Son receive the honor and the glory. Amen

Most Holy God, we confess with shame how much our worship has been in the power and the will of the flesh. We have dishonored You by this, grieved Your Spirit, and brought infinite loss to our own souls. Forgive us and save us from this sin. Teach us never to attempt to worship You except in Spirit and in truth. O Father, Your Holy Spirit dwells in us. Strengthen us, with power, by Him, that our inner man may indeed be a spiritual temple, where spiritual sacrifices are unceasingly offered. Teach us to yield self and the flesh, and wait for the Spirit to create in us worship acceptable to You, through Christ Jesus. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen

Lord God, I thank You again for the wonderful gift of the indwelling Spirit. Father, give me the Spirit of wisdom. May I know how deeply spiritual each word of Yours is and may I know that spiritual things can only be spiritually discerned. Teach me in all my contact with Your Word to deny the flesh and the fleshly mind, and to wait in deep humility and faith for the inward working of the Spirit to quicken the Word. May my meditation of Your Word, my keeping of it in faith and obedience, be in Spirit and in truth, in life and in power. Amen

Blessed Lord Jesus, I do believe. Help my unbelief and perfect the work of faith in me. Teach me that the Holy Spirit and His power is the glory that You give to us. Teach me to hold these blessed truths in my mind, but with my spirit, to wait on You, for your Spirit to fill me.

Lord, I bow before Your glory in humble faith. Let all the life of self and the flesh be brought low and perish as I worship and wait before You. Let the Spirit of glory become my life. Let Your presence break down all trust in self and make room for You. Let my life be one of faith to the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Amen

Lord Jesus, You have sent forth Your Holy Spirit into our hearts to be the power that lives and acts in our innermost being and to give us the revelation of Yourself. Bring Your church to see this truth that has been so hidden and lost - to experience it and bear witness to it in power. May every true believer have the indwelling and the leading of Your Spirit. Teach me, my Lord, to wait on You, as by Your Spirit, You work within me. May I constantly be aware that Christ's Spirit dwells in me. Amen
